HPSpark algorithm - BAFTA Award Programmes 2023

BAFTA are always searching for new ways to encourage guests to take home these programmes at our Award events and what better way than to make each one entirely unique and one-of-a-kind for each of our guests. HPSpark, created by Oswin Tickler and introduced to us by F.E. Burman, gave us the opportunity to do exactly that. I instantly recognised the potential of this algorithm based print, to send BAFTA's message about diversity to our audience. It also tied in perfectly with our sustainability aims to reduce print waste, and encourage greater pick up on the night of our award ceremonies.

5,550 individual programme covers were created over the course of 5 months for 4 Awards ceremonies.

To do this, one to one workshops were held between myself and Oswin to determine the algorithm that worked best for the covers. I showed him the key art I had created (see BAFTA Awards Season 2023) and I broke that down into a series of shapes that were then placed into the algorithm and used to create the variable prints. This was finished off nicely with our Awards logos and a gold foiled BAFTA mask and spine. Every single cover was finally proofed and approved by myself and the BAFTA Print Editor.

 

Each set of awards programmes were clearly part of a larger set and identifiable as using the same process, however made distinctively different using individual colour palettes determined by myself and designed assets that are relevant to the film, games and TV industries.
